Notes from a small island A weblog by Jonathan Ali |
Tuesday, January 21, 2003 I've just read Nicholas' post on Nicholson Baker's A Box of Matches and the varied reviews it's been getting; mere minutes before I was reading the January 13 Newsweek (print edition) review of the novel. Reviewer David Gates thinks it's Baker's best to date: "For Baker, at least, this is a rigourously classical work: its structural and thematic unity in plain view, the whimsy and razzle-dazzle toned down by melancholy.... his most affecting and satisfying novel yet." I just think the idea of a book begining with a new box of matches being opened and ending when the matches run out is rather cool. posted by Jonathan | 2:53 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
