Saturday, February 22, 2003 The UK Guardian Books page today carries an interesting article by Caryl Phillips, describing a discussion he had with Chinua Achebe recently about Joseph Conrad and Heart of Darkness, the book its admirers call "ironic" and its critics call just plain racist. Worth reading, and not just for the rather dubious "epiphany" Phillips claims to come to at the end, but more for the inevitable reference to Naipaul, who Achebe rather dismissively refers to as Phillips' "friend". posted by Jonathan | 12:23 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
