Notes from a small island

So Palestine has a new Prime Minister, Abu Mazen, and it seems as if the first steps to proper and responsible self-government that will lead to statehood are being taken.

I say "seems" because there's still a long, long way to go. But if Ariel Sharon and his partners, as well as Hamas and Islamic Jihad decide to play fair - and their track records don't inspire loads of hope, it must be said - and Mazen, if he is sincere, is allowed to carry out reforms, and the international community gets behind the process, then maybe, just maybe, a lasting peace is in the offing.
