Notes from a small island A weblog by Jonathan Ali |
Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Rosemary Brown, the first black woman to serve in the Canadian parliament and a Jamaican by birth, has died at the age of 72. Brown was a major women's rights campaigner in her adopted country throughout her career. A fellow activist, recalling her memories of Brown, quotes her as once saying, "To be black and female in a society which is both racist and sexist is to be in the unique position of having nowhere to go but up!" (Coincidentally, Diane Abbot, the first woman of colour to serve in the British parliament, is also of Jamaican heritage.) posted by Jonathan | 9:41 AM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
