Tuesday, June 10, 2003 My grandson, in whom I am well pleased British entertainment news story with local interest: actress Kate Winslet and film and theatre director Sam Mendes wed secretly last month in Anguilla, the couple going public with the news only yesterday. The local interest comes in the fact that Sam Mendes is the grandson of the late Trinidadian writer, Alfred "Alfy" Mendes. More interestingly, I've just finished reading Alfred Mendes' recently published autobiography. He died in 1991 at a Methuselan 94 years of age, some years shy of Sam Mendes' various professional successes.
