Notes from a small island
A weblog by Jonathan Ali

At the end, it wasn't the conches and horns that blew, not the calypsonians who sang, neither was there any sign of the joyous self-expression of a people jubilant at the overthrow of the colonial yoke. Instead, the chants of thousands of fleshy, sun-burnt bodies, some wrapped in Union Jacks, other in the cross of St George rang around the Kensington Oval to acclaim a team who have made them proud.

--Michael Atherton, writing in Sunday's UK Telegraph, in the wake of England's series-clinching victory against the West Indies yesterday.
