Notes from a small island A weblog by Jonathan Ali |
Saturday, May 01, 2004 I mentioned that I'd heard he was coming to Australia again. Yes, he thought so.... Was he aware of current political and social problems in Australia? He was silent for a moment, then asked: did I mean with Islamic terrorism? My answer - that there are other, perhaps more pressing problems, the plight of Aborigines, for instance - did not seem to impress him greatly. Not for the first time, I had the strong feeling that anything beyond this most courteous gentleman's immediate concerns remains a matter of indifference to him, just as he claims to be indifferent to the world - England, the Wiltshire countryside - where he has been living for many years. -- From an interview with VS Naipaul, in today's Sydney Morning Herald. (Naipaul ended up not making that Australia trip, which was to be for the Sydney Writers' Festival, due to ill health.
