Notes from a small island A weblog by Jonathan Ali |
Monday, August 09, 2004 A feud between South African writer Nadine Gordimer and Trinidadian Ronald Suresh Roberts, who for the past eight years has been working on Gordimer's official biography, has just come to light. According to reports--see here and here--things went awry last year when the notoriously prickly Gordimer objected to certain passages and announced that the book would no longer be allowed to carry the tag as her authorised biography. Gordimer's publishers dropped the book, titled No Cold Kitchen, but Roberts says it will be brought out next year by another publisher. He accuses the Nobel winner of using "Faustian leverage" on her publishers, and of the greatest hypocrisy: "She is supposed to represent freedom of speech but she wanted complete control, tsar-like, which would have turned the manuscript into pious crap." posted by Jonathan | 3:01 PM 0 comments 0 Comments: |
